This is a quick description on splitting gears. It describes splitting gears with a 13 speed transmission. I will refer to shift point frequently, and this varies by engine make. The optimal shift point for the engine in the truck I run is 1500 RPM.
Splitting while shifting up (basic)
- Work your way to fifth gear, the first gear you can split.
- Bring your engine RPMs to optimal shift point (fairly often 1500 RPM)
- Move the splitter button forward
- Back off the accelerator (until split finishes)
- Roll back into the accelerator and accelerate
- Bring your engine RPMs to optimal shift point again
- Move the splitter button back
- Make a quick shift to sixth gear (half the RPM change of a full gear)
- Repeat this process to continue shifting up
Splitting while shifting down (basic)
Description starts in eight high.
- Bring your engine RPMs down to 1200 (if already lower, DO NOT attempt to bring them up, simply start the shift)
- Back off the accelerator
- Move the splitter button back
- Roll back into the accelerator (until split finishes, about 150 RPMs higher)
- Back off the accelerator
- Bring your engine RPMs down to 1200 (if already lower, DO NOT attempt to bring them up, simply start the shift)
- Move the splitter button forward, clutch and move shifter to neutral (then release clutch), bring engine RPMs up about 150 RPMs, clutch and move shifter into seventh gear (then release clutch)
- Repeat this process to continue shifting down
